Luchino Visconti, Elio Petri and blaxploitation noir from Radiance in December
Radiance has announced its December Blu-ray and UHD releases for December, which will consist of Luchino Visconti’s debut feature Ossessione, and director Elio Petri’s bittersweet comedy The Teacher from Vigevano on Blu-ray, plus Petri’s thought-provoking ghost story A Quiet Place in the Country on UHD + Blu-ray dual format. On the Transmission label, meanwhile, we have Across 110th Street, an influential heist-thriller that combines film noir and blaxploitation, which is being released as a 4K UHD + Blu-ray edition. OSSESSIONE [OBSESSION] (Italy 1943)

Gino (Massimo Girotti, Senso), a drifter, arrives at a dusty trattoria in the Po Valley where he meets unhappily married Giovanna (Clara Calamai, Deep Red). Their first encounter ignites illicit passion and the pair plan to escape together with a plot to murder her husband.
Adapted from James M. Cain’s The Postman Always Rings Twice, Luchino Visconti’s remarkable debut is a sweaty, sensual and morally ambiguous portrait of lust and desperation. Suppressed by Fascist censors, Ossessione launched a new era in Italian cinema and stands as a foundational work of neorealism.

She insists he quits his job, gives up on his pension, and opens a small shoe factory…
Teetering between humour and tragedy, this early film by Elio Petri (A Quiet Place in the Country, The Working Class Goes to Heaven) is commedia all’italiana at its most bittersweet. Sordi’s bumbling husband careens from catastrophe to catastrophe as he navigates changing definitions for happiness in 1960s Italy.

Leonardo (Franco Nero, The Day of the Owl) is a celebrated artist plagued by nightmares which stop him from completing his work. His agent and sometime lover, Flavia (Vanessa Redgrave, The Devils), encourages him to relax, so he buys a country villa. Once there he begins tracing the story of the previous owner while Flavia’s presence in the house seems to awaken something as she encounters one mysterious accident after another.
Part ghost story, part meditation on the creative process told through the excesses of the 1960s. Elio Petri (The Working Class Goes to Heaven) brilliantly fuses these ideas in ways that are at times shocking, yet thought-provoking in their investigation of art, sex and madness, set to an eerie score by Ennio Morricone.

Three crooks hold-up a Mob bank in Harlem – they come away with $300,000, but the heist goes awry and results in the death of both Black and Italian gangsters, as well as two police officers. The massacre is the catalyst for all out war on the streets of New York, as all three elements – the Black and Italian mobs, and the police – jockey to regain control of their territory and to find the culprits.
Assigned to the case for the police are police veteran Captain Matelli (Anthony Quinn – Lawrence of Arabia, La Strada), a bigot prone to violent outbursts, and Lt. Pope (Yaphet Kotto – Alien, Midnight Run), a less experienced Black detective assigned to the case for ‘political reasons’. The pair are forced to learn to work together in order to survive the violent chaos that is about to ensue…
Shot on location in New York with then state-of-the-art handheld cameras, Across 110th Street is a gritty, violent piece of 70s cinema that combines elements of blaxploitation and film noir into a uniquely compelling and influential gangster movie, with a memorable soul and funk soundtrack from JJ.
