Fargo, Wargames, more Shawscope, Clash of the Titans and more from Arrow in November
Arrow Video has announced its November disc release slate, and once again, it’s a sumptuous collection of cinematic offerings. On UHD only we have John Badham’s hacker thriller WarGames, and Joel and Ethan Coen’s masterful Fargo. Coming separately on UHD and Blu-ray is 4K UHD is the original Clash of the Titans with its wonderful Ray Harryhausen creatures, and Robert Aldrich wartime favourite The Dirty Dozen. On Blu-ray only is Shawscope Presents: Street Gangs of Hong Kong, and a double-bill of The Blade Spares None / The Hurricane. Full details below.
CLASH OF THE TITANS (UK / USA 1981)

Ray Harryhausen, cinema’s most celebrated creator of spectacular special effects, retired at the top of his game by returning to the realm of Greek myth with his final film, the soaring fantasy classic Clash of the Titans.

Oft-imitated but never matched, Joel & Ethan Coen (Barton Fink, No Country For Old Men) are among the most celebrated filmmakers working in the world today. With Fargo, a darkly comic crime story set in small town Minnesota, they created one of the defining films of the 1990s.
Desperate for money, small town car salesman Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) hires two squabbling criminals (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare) to kidnap his wife with a view to extracting a hefty ransom from his wealthy father-in-law. But once the kidnapping takes place, nothing goes according to plan, and as the police investigate the bloody fallout, the hole Jerry digs for himself just keeps getting deeper.

SHAWSCOPE PRESENTS: STREET GANGS OF HONG KONG (Hong Kong 1973-1980)

In the wake of Bruce Lee’s contemporary-set kung fu films, legendary studio Shaw Brothers would start their own wave of socially charged martial arts cinema, where brave fighters face off against the dastardly street gangs of Hong Kong!
Jointly directed by action maestros Chang Cheh and Kuei Chih-Hung, The Delinquent (Fen nu qing nian, 1973) tells of a hot-headed young martial artist fighting back against the ruthless triad gang trying to recruit him. Kung fu prodigy Chen Kuan-Tai stars in The Teahouse (Sing gei cha low, 1974) and its sequel Big Brother Cheng (Da ge Cheng, 1975) as a small business owner reluctantly resorting to violence to protect his establishment and keep the city safe. The saga continues with the spinoff Big Bad Sis (Sa dam ying, 1976), where a factory worker uses her formidable combat skills to train her sworn sisters to fight back against the men who oppress them. Chen Kuan-Tai returns alongside future The Killer star Danny Lee in The Big Holdup (Da jie an, 1975) where a group of robbers pulls off a bountiful heist, but there could be a traitor in their midst. Set in the Republican era, director Chor Yuen’s The Convict Killer (Cha chi nan fei, 1980) stars Shaw luminary Ti Lung, recently released from prison and hellbent on finding the man who framed him, armed with an iron chain and righteous fury. Finally, in one of the chief inspirations behind John Woo’s A Better Tomorrow, an upright police inspector and a powerful triad leader must contend with being bound by blood in Hua Shan’s landmark The Brothers (Long hu xiong di, 1979).

“Shall we play a game?” With this enduring line begins 1983’s WarGames, one of the most exciting and prescient sci-fi thrillers to come out of the ’80s, tautly directed by John Badham (Saturday Night Fever, Blue Thunder), and featuring star-making performances from Matthew Broderick (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) and Ally Sheedy (The Breakfast Club).
Broderick plays David Lightman, a bright high-schooler who spends most of his free time on his home computer. All he wants to do is play the latest video games (and, on occasion, alter his grades). But when he dials into a program called Global Thermonuclear War, he soon realises he’s unwittingly hacked into the WOPR, the Department of Defense’s brand-new supercomputer, setting a sequence of events in motion that could ignite World War III. Lightman and his friend Jennifer (Sheedy) find themselves in a desparate race against the clock to find the WOPR’s designer, the reclusive computer genius Dr Stephen Falken (John Wood, Ladyhawke), to prevent nuclear Armageddon.

THE BLADE SPARES NONE / THE HURRICANE (Hong Kong 1971-72)

In 1970, veteran producer Raymond Chow broke free of Shaw Brothers to form Golden Harvest, recruiting a plethora of skilled technicians, innovative choreographers and future superstars. Among them, the young Nora Miao helped put the fledgling company on the map and reinvigorated the female-led wuxia genre, showcasing all her talent and charisma in The Blade Spares None (Dao bu liu ren, 1971) and The Hurricane (Jin xuan feng, 1972).
In Teddy Yip’s surrealist wuxia The Blade Spares None, Miao plays Ho Li-Chun, a swordswoman seeking revenge for her father’s assassination by an avaricious fiend posing as a prince. Alongside her righteous comrades Tang Ching-Yun (Patrick Tse Yin, Shaolin Soccer) and Chen Jo-Yu (James Tien, Fist of Fury), they’ll defeat anyone who stands in their way in their pursuit of the imposter prince.
