Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent on 4K UHD, Blu-ray & DVD from MUBI in September

Global film distributor, streaming service and production company MUBU has announced that the award-winning political crime-thriller The Secret Agent [O Agente Secreto], from acclaimed Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho (Bacurau, Aquarius), will be available to buy on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Standard Blu-ray and DVD in September.

With four Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor (Moura), Best Casting and Best International Feature Film, two BAFTA nominations for Best Film Not in the English Language and Best Original Screenplay, and two Golden Globe wins for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama (Moura) and Best Foreign Language Film, Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent is a gripping, mischievous political thriller that entertains as much as it provokes. Set amid the vibrant cultural landscape of 1970s Brazil, the film immerses audiences in the nation’s charged atmosphere, capturing the grandeur of the period’s golden-age cinema through sumptuous cinematography and a bold, era-defining soundtrack.

Marcelo (Wagner Moura) is, a university professor and father fleeing a mysterious past who travels from São Paulo to the seaside city of Recife during Carnival in hopes of reuniting with his son. Swept into a dizzying world of colour, noise, and unforgettable characters, Marcelo soon discovers that even in his new refuge he’s being tailed and spied on by watchful neighbours. As the city’s sights and sounds intensify, so too does the sense that Recife’s intricate web of secrets – and the tentacles of corruption reaching toward him – may leave him with no escape.

Starring Wagner Moura (Narcos, Civil War), Maria Fernanda Cândido (Vermelho Monet, The Traitor) and Gabriel Leone (Eduardo and Monica, Verdades Secretas), the film received its UK Premiere at the 2025 BFI London Film Festival and its World Premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where Moura won the Best Actor Award, Mendonça Filho was awarded Best Director, and the film received the Art House Cinema Award and FIPRESCI Prize for Best Film.
