At the moment archaeologist Julian Fuchs (Andrew Keir) and his expedition team discover the tomb of the evil ancient Egyptian Queen Tera (Valerie Leon), his daughter Margaret (also Leon) is born exactly in Tera’s image. Years later, Corbeck (James Villiers) wishes to resurrect Tera and use her immense power for his own nefarious ends. With Margaret’s help, they hunt down the relics required for the occult ceremony in which Tera’s soul, that has been sojourning in the identical body of Margaret, will be transferred to her preserved corpse…
Based on a novel by Dracula author Bram Stoker, and directed by Seth Holt (Taste of Fear), the 1971 film was scripted by Christopher Wickling (who wrote Demons of the Mind, Studiocanal’s other Hammer release in April), with striking cinematography and production design from Hammer regulars Arthur Grant (Demons of the mind and Studiocanal’s March release Fear in the Night) and Scott MacGregor (Vampire Circus).
With a cast including Andrew Keir (who stepped in when Peter Cushing had to withdraw from the production), James Villers (Asylum), and the magnificent Valerie Leon (Carry on Matron) in two roles, Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb is a genuinely entertaining treat, filled with fantastic set pieces, gruesome moments, and a suitably eerie score by Tristram Cary (Quatermass and the Pit).
Starburst magazine calls it a “satisfying addition to the Mummy series of films”, with Hammer expert David Huckvale adding “without doubt Hammer’s most fascinating ancient Egyptian horror film”. The new 4K release features brand new extras detailing the troubled behind-the-scenes of the film..
