The Ugly Stepsister on Second Sight UHD & Blu-ray in February

Second Sight Films has announced that it will be releasing The Ugly Stepsister [Den stygge stesøsteren], writer-director Emilie Blichfeldt’s body horror take on a the Cinderella fairytale, as a Limited Edition UHD/Blu-ray package in February, alongside regular UHD and Blu-ray releases.

An impressionable and idealistic young woman dreams of marrying the kingdom’s prince but her beautiful stepsister becomes her greatest rival. Increasingly desperate she resorts to extreme measures in a quest for the physical perfection she believes will win the prince’s heart.

Described by Maegan Navarro on Bloody Disgusting as “an impressive feature debut that manages a rare feat: offering a wholly unique version of a classic fairy tale that we’ve never seen before while returning to its violent roots,” The Ugly Stepsister is for this horror fan one of the deliciously grisly genre treats of 2025. Although comparisons have been drawn to Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, but as Sheila O’Malley noted over at RogerEbert.com, “The Ugly Stepsister is nastier, angrier, and grosser, if you can believe it.”
