Punishment Room Blu-ray cover

PUNISHMENT ROOM [SHOKEI NO HEYA] (Japan 1956)

Limited Edition Blu-ray | 25 January 2027 | pre-order price: £19.99.

A bored university student takes teenage rebellion to extremes, as he bullies classmates, scams his father out of his savings and rapes a college girl after spiking her drink. But as the number of targets grows, his victims band together and devise a plan for revenge, to be carried out in the titular punishment room.

One of his darkest and most controversial films, Punishment Room saw director Ichikawa Kon (Ten Women in Black, Fires on the Plain) courting scandal with his unflinching depiction of abuse and rape among amoral post-war Japanese youth.

Based on the story by future Tokyo governor Ishihara Shintaro, this film was highly divisive upon its initial release, but perhaps more pertinent today than ever.

FAREWELL, MR. PRESIDENT [JÄÄHYVÄISET PRESIDENTILLE] (Finland 1987)

Limited Edition Blu-ray | 25 January 2027 | pre-order price: £19.99

Asko is a waiter who sees the elites around him enjoying life. Dissatisfied with the state of the world he determines the best way to change things is to assassinate the president of Finland. A talented marksman, he practices on a real target before working up to the key event. His antics draw attention from the police and he finds himself increasingly under pressure as detective Hanivaara closes in.

As Asko, Hannu Lauri won Finland’s top acting prize for his chilling performance, while the production itself was an anomaly in the Finnish film industry, an explosive thriller influenced by Hollywood that created a new blend of delirious Eurocrime. Now newly restored from original negative materials, Farewell, Mr. President is released for the first time on any format outside of Finland.

I... for Icasus Blu-ray cover

I… FOR ICARUS [I… COMME ICARE] (France 1979)

Limited Edition Blu-ray | 25 January 2027 | pre-order price: £19.99

While riding in his motorcade and greeting the crowd, president Marc Jarry is assassinated. A suspect is quickly apprehended at the scene, his weapon found on a nearby balcony. All members of the commission investigating the event agree with its findings – except for Henri Volney (Yves Montand, Choice of Arms), who reopens the case.

Heavily inspired by the JFK assassination and taking its stylistic cues from American films like The Conversation and The Parallax View, this conspiracy thriller from Henri Verneuil (Any Number Can Win) is a procedural gem all its own. Delving into the psychology of responsibility, murder, and obedience – with a chilling reenactment of the Milgram experiment – I… for Icarus keeps its audience teetering on the line between healthy scepticism and paranoia.

When Harry accidentally oversleeps and misses their planned rendez-vous, he heads to the all-night diner on Los Angeles’s Miracle Mile where Julie works, where he desperately tries to find a way to reach her. But when Harry unwittingly takes a phone call from a payphone clearly intended for someone else, his entire world falls apart, forcing him into a race across a rapidly unravelling city to try and find Julie, before time runs out for him – and for everyone else…
