Demon Hunters, David Lynch, a Ukrainian classic and a dystopian sf from Criterion UK in November
Spirit Entertainment has announced the Criterion UK disc releases for November, which this time will include four titles, one up on the usual three. The releases themselves will be: internationally successful animated hit KPop Demon Hunters on 4K UHD & Blu-ray dual format, two-disc Blu ray, and DVD; director Sergei Parajanov’s world cinema classic Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors on 4K UHD & Blu-ray dual format; David Lynch’s nightmarishly surreal and yet effortlessly cool love story, Wild at Heart on 4K UHD; and Ngozi Onwurah’s dystopian science fiction film, Welcome II the Terrordome on Blu-ray. A towering achievement of world cinema, Sergei Parajanov’s modernist landmark fuses folkloric traditions, animistic mysticism, and hallucinatory visual invention. Adapted from a 1911 novella by Ukrainian writer Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi, Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors follows Ivanko (Ivan Mykolaichuk), a young Hutsul peasant who experiences both the depths of grief and glimmers of hope as he attempts to move beyond his first love, Marichka (an ethereal Larysa Kadochnykova).
Steeped in the earthy atmosphere of the Carpathian Mountains, and featuring kinetic, radiantly colourful cinematography by Yuri Illienko and a collage like experimental soundtrack, Parajanov’s film is a singularly mythopoeic work of art.

Ngozi Onwurah’s radically ahead-of-its-time dystopian sci-fi film Welcome II the Terrordome – the first theatrically distributed British feature by a Black woman – furiously evokes a near future in which Black people are segregated within a slum called the Terrordome, where simmering violence and anger threaten to boil over in the wake of a young boy’s murder.
Named after an incendiary single by Public Enemy, the film uses its rap soundtrack to both comment on and drive its narrative, part of a sensibility in which American, British, and African cultures collide and the past, present, and future collapse. In this prescient work, Onwurah builds a visionary, Afrofuturist cosmology that connects the history of slavery to modern-day systemic racial brutality.
