The November disc releases from Radiance Films have been announced as Radical Japan: Survival and Desire – Six Films by Shohei Imamura and George Armitage’s Miami Blues on UHD/Blu-ray, and director Marie-Claude Treilhou’s Simone Barbès or Virtue and Vittorio Cottafavi’s A Free Woman on Blu-ray. Additional releases for November will consist of Michael Almereyda’s Nadja on Blu-ray from Transmission, Jim Mickle’s Mulberry Street on Blu-ray from Chasm, and Riccardo Freda The Ghost on UHD/Blu-ray from Rare Video. RADICAL JAPAN: SURVIVAL AND DESIRE – SIX FILMS BY SHOHEI IMAMURA (Japan 1958-1964)

The second instalment in The Radiance series exploring Japan’s most groundbreaking films and filmmakers focuses on the country’s premier iconoclast, two-time Palme d’or winner Shohei Imamura.
This collection presents three classics in 4K: Pigs and Battleships [Buta to gunken] (1961) vividly portrays life around a U.S. naval base; The Insect Woman [Nippon konchūki] (1963) establishes the characteristically resilient Imamura heroine, which broke every rule for portraying women in Japanese film; and Intentions of Murder continues and perfects this portrayal in epic form. Also included are Imamura’s rarely-seen first three features: Stolen Desire [Nusumareta Yukujo] (1958) follows the travails of a vivacious theatre troupe; Nishi Ginza Station [Nishi Ginza ekimae] (1953)is a tale of infidelity executed as a musical; and Endless Desire sees ex-soldiers digging for wartime loot.

On the cusp of marriage, Liana becomes convinced she shouldn’t live a life in service of a man. Instead, she leaves for Amalfi, where she embarks on an affair. From there she makes for Paris, but each new adventure is compromised by some kind of emotional constraint, culminating in a final act of tragedy.
Vittorio Cottafavi’s emotionally complex story exhibits the melodramatic finesse of Douglas Sirk with a style reminiscent of Max Ophuls. A remarkably modern exploration of female autonomy, A Free Woman has been newly restored by Radiance and is presented on home video for the first time outside of Italy.

George Armitage (Grosse Pointe Blank) adapted celebrated noir author Charles Willeford’s novel Miami Blues for the screen with new star Alec Baldwin in the lead role as sociopathic criminal Frederick J. Frenger, Jr. Arriving in Miami fresh out of jail he commits one crime after another when he meets young hooker Susie (Jennifer Jason Leigh, Single White Female) who he starts to build a pseudo married life with, including the home cooking and the white picket fence. As Frederick tries to juggle domesticity with his mounting crimes, dogged cop Hoke Moseley (Fred Ward, Tremors) threatens to put his freedom in jeopardy.
Baldwin is brilliant as the unhinged criminal tearing through Miami while Armitage perfectly balances the humour and violence in this singular crime comedy that betrays the quirky influence of producer Jonathan Demme (Something Wild, Married to the Mob).
